From a base in Cusco this combination of adventure and adrenalin takes in a 3 day rafting trip on and single day train ride to the lost Inca city of Machu Picchu.
The adventure starts at the put-in for the Apurimac river, the source of the mighty Amazon. During the next three days there are numerous class IV rapids in a magnificent gorge. Camp each night on the white sand beaches next to the river and enjoy delicious meals cooked over an open fire. It’s what we call a wild night out.
From the ancient Inca capital of Cusco it is a spectacular bus journey to the start of this river deep in the heart of an impressive 3000m deep canyon. From here all supplies are taken for three days of wilderness rafting. No previous rafting experience is necessary. Camp each night on pristine white sand beaches and enjoy delicious meals cooked over an open fire.
Built by the Incas on the summit of "Machu Picchu" (Old Peak), the city overlooks the deep canyon of the Urubamba river in a semi-tropical area 43 miles from the city of Cusco. It sits on a mountain side of extraordinary beauty, in the middle of a tropical mountain forest. Machu Picchu was the most amazing urban creation of the Inca Empire with its giant walls, terraces and ramps. The natural setting on the eastern slope of the Andes encompasses the upper Amazon basin with its rich diversity of species. The whole archaeological complex covers approx 5 square kms.
After a zig-zag ascent to Poroy, your train continues across a desolate Andean landscape of wide plains and terraced hillsides, before descending to the Sacred Valley of the Inca and Machu Picchu. It’s not your average commute.
